From the importance of having a will to hydroponic gardening, people 55 and older can learn more about their communities and the world around them in 12 classes offered this spring by the West Kentucky Community and Technical College Training Center.
Classes offered include:
o "Medication Choices," 1 p.m. Thursday, First Christian Church. Dr. Troy Nelson will compare generic to name-brand medications.
o "Lower Town, Paducah, Then and Now," 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, McCracken County Public Library. Jay Downs Siska and his wife, artist Char Downs, will share their experiences collecting old pictures and stories for their book about Lower Town.
o "Tour of Anderson Technical Building Kitchen and College Bistro," 2 to 3 p.m., Feb. 15, Anderson Technical Buildling, WKCTC campus. Chef Brett McCarthy, director of culinary arts at WKCTC, will give a tour of the newly renovated kitchen and bistro.
o "Benefits of Humor and Laughter in Healing," 1 :30 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 22, McCracken County Public Library. Led by registered nurse Reva Harper of Western Baptist Hospital.
o "Personal Safety," 2 p.m. March 9, United Church of Christ. Led by J.P. Roberts, acting captain of the Paducah Police Department.
o "The Importance of Having a Will," 1 to 2 p.m. March 15, McCracken County Public Library. Led by Melissa Yates, an attorney with Denton & Keuler.
o "Sands of Time, Then and Now," 1 to 2 p.m. March 22, Paducah Women's Club. Dorothy Nell Harper of Clinton will read poetry from her books and unpublished works.
o "Paducah's Old Buildings, Asset or Eyesore?" 1 :30 p.m., March 31, comer of Water Street and Kentucky Avenue. Will be rescheduled if weather is not suitable. Bill Black will discuss the architecture of historic buildings in a four-block area.
o "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., April 6, Clemens Fine Arts Building, WKCTC Campus. WKCTC professor Norman Wurgler will examine the background and musical excerpts from the musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."
o "Hydroponics," 1 to 2 p.m., April 10, United Church of Paducah. Tina Trevathan will demonstrate how to grow tomatoes and vegetables in water on a patio.
o "Grand Chain Lodge," 10:30 a.m. April 18. Bus tour to Illinois. $20 bus fee. Participants will eat lunch on their own at the lodge, followed by a program by RoseMary Orr on the history of Fort Wilkinson Cantonment in Pulaski County near the Ohio River. The bus will also stop at the Olmsted Lock and Dam construction site.
o "Lecture-Recital of Organ Music for the Easter Season," 1 :30 to 2:30 p.m., April 26, St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Jim Hess, director of music and liturgy at the church, will present the program and music.
